My beautiful little grump

Today has been blissfully uneventful so far. Lela is taking breast milk by bottle in really small increments, but tolerating it well. She does not seem to be moving food through her stomach and intestines as quickly as she should, but her doctor says this is to be expected and that it is fairly normal for preemies. They did an x-ray today and saw no signs of bowel obstruction, so they're going to continue with the bottle feedings and just keep an eye on her.

Our friends Seth, Lisa and Ryan stopped by last night and brought us dinner and got a chance to see Lela down in the NICU. Thanks for the food, guys! Yesterday afternoon, Babak's uncle Daii Hamid stopped by and brought some beautiful flowers. We also got an afternoon visit from my friend and mentor from my office. Lela loves all the visitors and attention!

So, Lela is starting to remind me of her namesake my Grandma Charlotte. Like all low-birth weight babies, Lela is really skinny and wrinkled - two very good adjectives to describe Grandma. But what's more, Lela makes these great facial expressions: she frowns or furrows her little forehead all the time. She frowns with her entire face, scrunches up her eyebrows, purses her lips, squints her eyes, and she looks so put out when you move her around, like "hey guys, I was peaceful here...I just want to sleep!". She is such a beautiful little grump! But, this skinny, wrinkled, frowning baby has the most wonderful heart and I know that "Charlotte" was the perfect namesake.

  1. Perfect description of Mom. I know she is so proud of you and Babak for being such great partners in your baby's life. She is probably showering all her stubborness and love onto Lela to help her become stronger every day. My love and prayers are there for ya'll too.
