Eid Mobarak! Happy New Year! Norooz is the Persian New Year. It occurs on the exact day of the spring equinox. To commemorate the New Year, Persian families set out the Sofreh Haft Sin, or spread with seven items that start with the letter "S" in Farsi and represent wishes for the new year. We don't have all 7 "S"es, but this is only our first time setting the Sofreh Haft Sin in our house (thanks Shohreh!). We have:
Sabzi - sprouts, which symbolize renewal and rebirth
Sib - apple, which represents health and beauty
Serkeh - vinegar, which represents age and patience
Somagh - sumac, which represents the spice of life
Sekeh - gold coins, which represent wealth and prosperity
The spread itself is the same we used for the Sofreh Aghd at our wedding.
The mirror brings brightness and light into the New Year
The Koranic scriptures symbolizes blessings for the New Year
The eggs are a symbol of fertility (already got that covered in 2009!)
The tea pot contains rose water
We should have a little goldfish swimming in the vase to represent life, but alas, this year we are goldfishless.
