Trip to the Zoo

We had a long list of "tourist" things to do before leaving D.C. and we have not managed to do many of them.  Last weekend, however, we made it to the Zoo!  Well, we cheated and visited the Baltimore Zoo rather than the National Zoo, but I've hear the Baltimore Zoo may be the better of the two anyway.

You can just make out the sleeping rhinos in the background of this picture.  Lela did not show much interest in the napping Rhinos, but to be fair, they didn't look all that different than the giant rocks.

She had a lot of fun watching the polar bear siblings diving and swimming in their pool, but we were too busy watching the bears to get any good pictures.  Also fun...the giraffes!  We paid $2 for the privilege of feeding a one a branch.  They got very close to us!  One really liked Babak but I only got a horribly fuzzy picture of the giraffe nuzzling the back of his head.

No question, the best part of the zoo was the carousel ride at the end of the day.  Lela was VERY hesitant when she first mounted the penguin.  (Yes, Babak placed her on a penguin!  What about the horsies?)

This was the biggest smile we could get out of her while the ride was twirling around.

But when the ride stopped, she had a little melt-down, wailing "More penguin! More penguin!"  It didn't help that we were more than an hour past her usual nap time by that point.

She was so exhausted she practically fell asleep on the walk to the car.

All in all, a great day.
