We finally threw Lela a big birthday party for her 3rd birthday. Birthdays #1 and #2 were celebrated with close family (and shhhh...we didn't even celebrate them on or near her actual birthday) but for Birthday #3 we decided to go all out. We invited parents and siblings of Lela's friends, including several of our neighbors, as well as some extended family (thanks everyone who traveled from Baltimore and Austin!) for a big birthday celebration / housewarming party extravaganza. It was a lot of fun!
I admit that I got a little decoration-happy (fueled by crafty Martha Stewart-type moms filling Pinterest with inspirational (aspirational) images).
Since we still don't have any living room furniture to speak of, we rolled up the rug and set out some rental tables and chairs and turned our living room/dining room area into party-central. No need to worry about spills when there's nothing to spill on!
I got smart and had the food catered by HEB. My only culinary contribution was the rainbow jello cups - which looked awesome, but tasted about how you would expect. Oh, well - they were pretty to look at.

We served an assortment of finger sandwiches (including, of course, PB&J), carrot and celery ranch dressing cups, chips and dip, fruit, the adorable/disgusting jello cups and cake. There was lemonade in what was apparently a fascinating (to Lela) beverage dispenser, juice and milk boxes, and mimosas and beer for the grown-ups. Who says you can't serve drinks at a kid's party with a 10:30 am start time?
This was really the first true party we've ever thrown. We've never had a house big enough to hold more than 4-5 people in the same room before! Babak and I had a great time hanging out with friends and getting to know our neighbors and Lela had a great time playing with the kids and batting balloons around. I don't think we'll be repeating this event every year, though! 4th Birthday will be somewhere like rollercade (wait - do rollercades even exist anymore?!)
